Because the earth needs professional help.

Our climate is in crisis. We all want to help. But we might not know how. We’re talking to people who have figured out how to use their talents to combat climate change, with the hopes that their journeys might inspire your own.

The Team

Stephanie Spera, PhD

Co-host

Stephanie is a land-change scientist and assistant professor of geography and environment. In college, her advisor was heavily involved in Mars rover missions, so as an undergraduate she both learned how to analyze satellite data of Mars and that she would rather not study Mars. Steph was excited to move to New England for graduate school and use her remote-sensing and GIS skills to answer questions about problems here on Earth. She focused much of her graduate school research on analyzing the drivers and consequences of large-scale land-cover change in Brazil's relatively unprotected savanna biome, the Cerrado. Her current work focuses on disentangling the relationships between people, landscapes, and climate.

Steph also loves hiking, baking, road biking (in bike-friendly places), re-watching Veep, crossword puzzles, knitting, and hanging with her husband, son, cat, and dog.

Rachel Lupien, PhD

Co-Host

Rachel is a paleoclimatologist and organic geochemist working as a postdoctoral research scientist. She uses lake and ocean sediment to tell stories about the climates of the past. Her work focuses on African paleoclimate and the link between environmental change and human evolution. You can find Rachel in the chemistry lab, in her office forgetting to blink, or in a tiny boat anywhere in the world.

Rachel recently got into gravel cycling and is having fun exploring rail trails and back roads, but is completely #initforthefashion.
